About Our Centre
The McGregor Child Care Society operates a non-profit child care centre located on the Broadway Campus of Vancouver Community College. An inclusive program is provided for children aged between 18 months and 5 years in two independent settings.
Prior to 1983 the Centre was located on the V.C.C. Campus at Oak Street and 12th Avenue, and was known as the Parent Encouragement Group. The Child Care Centre was set up in 1972 for the parents on campus who had an urgent need for child care facilities. When the plans for the campus at 1155 East Broadway were arranged, no provision was made for the child care facility. Through lobbying by the Parent Encouragement Group, The Vocational Instructors Association and students it was made known that a child care centre was an essential component for a college campus. Mr. And Mrs. Robert McGregor made a generous donation towards the development of a child care facility associated with the new campus. A grant from the Vancouver Foundation and monies from the then Ministry of Social Services made the building of a child care centre a reality.
In 2007, as Vancouver Community College started an expansion phase there was, once again, a period of change for McGregor Child Care Centre. The Centre was housed in a temporary location within the campus building while construction of the Health Sciences building was taking place. In February of 2009, the staff and children moved onto the 5th floor of the new building into a purpose built childcare facility.
The on-campus operation of the McGregor Child Care Society receives in-kind donations from support services of Vancouver Community College [e.g. janitor services, security, building services etc.] as well as a contribution to our operating revenue.
